Yesterday, I attended the Parliamentary launch of a new research, “Future-proofing workplace health”, commissioned by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and conducted by WPI Economics. Many key points were raised, and in my reflection, I welcome the opportunity to be able to quantify the benefits provided by health and protection insurance products.
The report details the methodology used and the impact these benefits have on the wider economy, NHS resources, and population health. Close to me is the analysis on the role of vocational rehabilitation within Income Protection, helping individuals to return to work and stay in work.
I was pleased to see that adopting a biopsychosocial approach was also highlighted, as many factors are at play when considering someone’s return to health and work. Also, it is good to see the self-employed needs being mentioned, as workplace health interventions are not available to this segment, with recommendations for policy reform to improve the take up of IIP. "Income protection insurers are one of the main routes of access to vocational rehabilitation in the UK. Data on over 16,000 vocational rehabilitation cases collected by the ABI helps shed light on the performance of these interventions at scale”.
This is very powerful, as this is the first industry analysis of combined data, and reinforces the value of adopting and adapting evidence-based approaches in our sector. I’m very enthused by the outcomes reported and looking forward to continuing to help the insurance sector implement/review the application of early intervention and vocational rehabilitation within a biopsychosocial framework in the Income Protection insurance space.
Good to see industry colleagues, including fellow Vocational Rehabilitation Association Trustees. I recommend accessing the full report via this link.
